Town Hall - Sheffield

The Council had to solve the social problems which has arisen of the trebling of the population. They also had to obtain the land first (1886) and in this time they launched a competition of designs for architects. Of the 178 designs submitted, Mr. E W Mountford was judged to be the best. Town Hall was finally opened on 21st May 1897 by Queen Victoria. It needed four years when they started discuss about an extension and again Mr. E W Mountford was instructed to prepare plans for it. Another long time passed because of financial problems and the war the extension of the building got materialised in 1923. The costs were around 115,600 Pound and was opened by Prince of Wales 29th May 1923.

The Wicker - Sheffield

Wicker Urban Regeneration Area

Core questions to be addressed:
  • Which building/site?
  • Why this building/site?
  • Who would benefit from its refurbishment/development?
  • What type of development would be most appropriate/desirable?
  • Why this type of development in this place/area?
Finally we haven't been to Sheffield Town Hall. We went to Wicker riverside regeneration area. This area needs to get developed. The City Council has started 4 years ago with an "Action Plan" and of the ten years framework are still six years to develop. Our task was to choose a building and develop it appropriate to their aims. This was the poster for our presentation. We had our own logo: TD Trent Development

Taylor Building

- Planning - Development - Construction - Real Estate -

Our reports consist of around 1000 words in different themes like: planning, development, construction and real estate. The main study in this theme is to get an overview how surveyors work in the different  themes. This building is currently used for educational purposes of Trent University.

In our planning theme we have to research which proposition either office purposes or to demolish the building and create a multi-storey car park could be more useful for the community. For both proposition we have to have a look into the local plan and have to figure out which policies could affect the proposals. What means that the planning permission either will get granted or won't get granted. In an easy way it means that they can start building up their purpose.

In the development theme they made us to think creative and profitable. A unique and architectural building like the Taylor building shouldn't be demolished. It isn't a listed building but it is located in a conservation area with a few listed buildings around. They buildings are listed because of their architectural and historic heritage and get classified in importance in Grade I, II* and II. How does the Local City Council classify a building? They consider age, rare, special architecture and economic interest.

In construction we have to take note about the defections at the building and write a report. Going further into debt we had to do a full inspection of in & external elements plus yard of the building . But it's not only this which covers the construction part of a building.
